The 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans (Club 100) is so grateful to have been included in the following publications this summer. We appreciate the opportunity to work with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, National Parks magazine of the National Parks Conservation Association, and Lighthouse Hawaii magazine, allowing us to reach a wide range of readers.
We are so grateful to have received support by Honolulu Star-Advertiser Pat Gee, in writing an article about the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans (Club 100) and Legacy2Action program. It was an honor to share about what Club 100 is doing to engage youth in keeping the legacy of the 100th Infantry Battalion alive. Students learn the values that made the 100th so successful and apply these values to their community service projects (Gambari: Perseverance, Gaman: Resilience, Chuugi: Loyalty and “one team” mentality, Sekinin: Responsibility, Giri: Sense of duty).
The article, “100th Battalion soldiers’ values motivate youth,” published in the June 10, 2024 issue, can be viewed on the Honolulu Star-Advertiser website here https://www.staradvertiser.com/2024/06/10/hawaii-news/100th-battalion-soldiers-values-motivate-youth/?HSA=df0ae1124bfaef5ad26dfc7ef9b4045d0d942e99.
We were contacted in March by journalist Jacob Baynham, who requested assistance in his research to write a National Parks magazine article about the 100th Infantry Battalion and Cat Island. The article was recently published in the Summer 2024 issue, and can be viewed online here https://www.npca.org/articles/3798-the-dog-trainers-of-cat-island.
Lighthouse magazine features the 100th as its August 2024 cover story.
Finally, our Communications and Education chairs worked with Lighthouse Hawaii (ライトハウスハワイ), which features our 100th Infantry Battalion Legacy2Action program as the cover story in their August 2024 issue!
As a Hawaii community life free magazine published in the Japanese language, Lighthouse Hawaii provides useful information to enrich the lives of their readers, including Hawaii residents from Japan and long-stay Japanese travelers. We are grateful for their support in helping us to bridge the story of the 100th Infantry Battalion and introduce our Legacy2Action program to new audiences.
Along with our partners, 'Iolani School , the University of Hawaii at Manoa Center on Aging and Central Pacific Bank, through this Legacy2Action problem-based learning initiative, we have challenged students to identify a problem or issue facing Hawaiʻi and to develop a creative solution using the values of the 100th Infantry Battalion.
The article includes an interview with Kathi Hayashi, 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans (Club 100) Treasurer and Education Chair, timeline historical summary of the 100th Infantry Battalion’s experiences from the 1930s to 1945, listing of the 100th/442nd awards and statistics, and highlight of seven Japanese keywords of values that were demonstrated by the men of the 100th Infantry Battalion — Ganbari / がんばり[persistence], Haji / 恥 [(not bringing) shame], Gaman/Enryo / がまん・遠慮 [quiet endurance・modesty/self-sacrifice], Sekinin / 責任 [responsibility], Giri / 義理・義務感 [duty/obligation], and Chuugi / 忠義・忠誠心 [loyalty].
